Facebook testing prepaid mobile recharge service in India; here’s how to use it

Just yesterday, we came across reports stating that Facebook has been testing digital payments in India within its Messenger app. To begin with, the social media giant is offering mobile recharge option, but will gradually rollout peer-to-peer, and peer-to-merchant payment service going forward, the report said. While the service is being beta tested with select users, the latest Facebook for Android app (version also brings in some handy changes.

To begin with, the user interface (UI) of the app has been revamped and it looks cleaner now. You have new icons that are bigger in size and look appealing too. The frequently used services show on the top, whereas the settings and privacy section has also been revamped with new icons, with grayscale logos. Among the interesting things, the new ‘Mobile  Recharge’ is also present here, and it lets you recharge any prepaid mobile number in India.

The list of supported operators include – Airtel, BSNL, MTNL (Mumbai and Delhi), Tata Docomo, Vodafone, Idea, Telenor and Jio. We have reached out to Facebook for a comment and will update the copy as and when we have an official statement. If you’re seeing this option on your Facebook app, here’s how you can use it to make prepaid recharges.

How to use Facebook prepaid mobile recharge service

Step One

To begin with, open Facebook app, tap on the hamburger menu on the top rightcorner, and tap on “Mobile Recharge” and then tap on “Recharge Now.”

Step Two

Next, enter your mobile number, and select the operator from the drop-down menu, followed by region. Ideally, after entering your mobile number, the operator should be detected automatically, but as it is in beta, there are some glitches, so select manually.

Step Three

Now, enter the recharge amount if you already know it, or tap on browse button, which will show you all the available recharge options, special vouchers and more. After selecting the plan or recharge option, then tap on “review order” at the bottom.

Step Four

In the order details page enter your credit or debit card number, and then tap on ‘place order’ at the bottom. As of now there is no support for mobile wallet, internet banking or UPI, but maybe the final version could support other payment options too.

You will be asked for an OTP or 3D secure password, and once authenticated, your prepaid mobile will be recharged. You will also get a confirmation receipt for the same.
